A flagel is a flat bagel (flat + bagel = flagel).
According to Village Voice food critic Robert Seitsema, the flagel was born in Brooklyn at Tasty Bagels in the early nineties amidst the low-carb diet craze. However, you are not necessarily eating less bagel when you eat a flagel so watch out - it may be flatter but it's wider.
